About
Momega makes wearables that measure how infants move and sleep, and the analysis that turns those recordings into validated developmental measures. We were founded in Helsinki in 2026, as a spin-out of the BABA Center research that built them.
Background
Momega grew out of the research group at the BABA Center, New Children's Hospital, Helsinki University Hospital. The question behind its work is a practical one: how do you measure an infant's development properly when a clinic visit only ever sees a few minutes of a child in an unfamiliar room? The group's answer has been to measure at home instead, with wearables a family can use on its own.
Two of those wearables are ready for use outside the laboratory. MAIJU, a suit with four movement sensors, measures gross motor development during ordinary play; over six years it was tested step by step — against trained human observers, against the Alberta Infant Motor Scale, against physical growth charts, and in independent cohorts in Helsinki and rural Malawi. NAPPA, a wearable diaper cover, follows an infant's sleep, respiration and position through the night. Each step was published, and more wearables are in development at the BABA Center.
A published method is not yet something another team can use. It needs garments made in the right sizes, an analysis service that is kept running, instructions a family can follow and someone to answer when a recording goes wrong. Momega was founded to provide exactly that — for the wearables available today, and for those that follow as they are validated.
What we do
- Garments
- Sensor-carrying garments made to be worn at home and washed between recordings — today MAIJU for motor development and NAPPA for sleep.
- Recording
- The Tessalogger app, which runs a recording from a phone or tablet and is included with every garment.
- Analytics
- The cloud analysis that turns a recording into validated measures — for movement, the BABA Infant Motor Score, normative growth charts and a second-by-second posture and movement profile; for sleep, sleep detection and respiration, arousals and position.
How we work
- What we offer is what was published. The analyses on this site are the ones described and validated in peer-reviewed papers, and every one of those papers is listed on the research page.
- We say what a measurement cannot do. Our wearables measure behaviour — how an infant moves, sleeps and breathes. None of them is a diagnosis on its own, and we would rather a customer hear the limits from us than discover them later.
- We measure where the child is. At home, during ordinary days and nights, recorded by the family — because that is where development actually happens.
The team
Momega is built by members of the BABA Center research group that developed and validated MAIJU and NAPPA. The work behind them brought together clinical neurophysiology, paediatric neurology, signal processing and machine learning, and textile design, with collaborators in Finland and abroad.
